Backstage Whispers overheard by Richard Andrews

The National Theatre production of Laura Wade's Home, I'm Darling, a comedy about sex, cake and the quest to be a perfect 50s housewife, with Katherine Parkinson, directed by Tamara Harvey, will be remounted at the Duke of York's Theatre, opening on 5th February.

The Young Vic Theatre's 2019 season will include Arthur Miller's Death Of A Salesman, the story of a small time travelling salesman with a blind belief in the American Dream, who, despite his lack of success, tries to force his failed ambitions and values onto his unwilling sons, with an all black cast headed by Wendell Pierce, Sharon D Clarke and Arinze Kene, directed by Marianne Elliott, opening on 9th May; Tree, an exploration of the past, present and future of South Africa, adapted from Idris Elba's album Mi Mandela, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah, with choreography by Gregory Maqoma, from 29th June; Federico Garcia Lorca's Blood Wedding, in a new version by Marina Carr, a tale of love, lust and betrayal, whose action is highly symbolic, incorporating song, chant, poetry, music, and rhythm, directed by Yael Farber, opening on 25th September; and Jackie Sibblies Drury's Fairview, a radical examining of the black diaspora wrapped in a family comedy, directed by Nadia Latif, opening on 5th December.

The spring season at the Watermill Theatre in Newbury will include the return of the Off Broadway musical Murder For Two, book and music by Joe Kinosian, book and lyrics by Kellen Blair, a murder mystery in which one actor plays the detective, one actor plays all the suspects, and they both play the piano, directed by Luke Sheppard, opening on 4th February; Shakespeare's Macbeth, directed by Paul Hart, opening on 4th March; the Broadway musical Amelie, book by Craig Lucas, music by Daniel Messe, lyrics by Nathan Tysen and Daniel Messe, based on the 2001 film about a young woman who discretely orchestrates the lives of the people around her, creating a world exclusively of her own making, directed by Michael Fentiman, opening a national tour on 15th April; and Oscar Wilde's The Importance Of Being Earnest, famously described by Wilde as 'a trivial comedy for serious people', opening on 27th May.

The Off Broadway musical Striking 12, book and lyrics by Brendan Milburn, Valerie Vigoda and Rachel Sheinkin, music by Valerie Vigoda, a grown-up bedtime story about a grumpy overworked city dweller who resolves to spend New Year's Eve alone in his apartment, when an unexpected visitor brings some much needed cheer, directed by Oliver Kaderbhai, will open at the Union Theatre, in Southwark, on 3rd December.

The spring season at the Queen's Theatre Hornchurch will include Amanda Whittington's Kiss Me Quickstep, a bittersweet comedy set in the world of competitive ballroom dancing, directed by Kirstie Davis, opening on 26th February; David Eldridge's In Basildon, a comedy exploring inheritance in the heart of Essex, directed by Douglas Rintoul, opening on 19th March; and the musical The Hired Man, book and lyrics by Melvyn Bragg, music by Howard Goodall, the story of a Cumbrian farm labourer and coal miner in the early 20th century, directed by Douglas Rintoul, with movement by Jane Gibson, opening on 30th April.

Tatty Hennessy's A Hundred Words For Snow, a one person play about a woman on a mission to get the ashes of her Arctic enthusiast father to the North Pole, performed by Gemma Barnett, directed by Lucy Atkinson, will open at Trafalgar Studios 2 on 7th March.
